HISTORICAL SKETCH

The League of Women Voters was founded from the National American Women's Suffrage Association after women gained the right to vote. A nonpartisan organization, the League sought "to promote political responsibility through informed and active participation of the citizens in government and to act on selected governmental issues." Its membership was and continues to be open to men as well as women.

The League of Women Voters of Indianapolis, organized by July 1920 and affiliated with both the national and state League of Women Voters, remains active today.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

The collection, filling twenty eight manuscript boxes and two oversized boxes, consists of minutes (1934-1979), annual reports (1935-1982), correspondence and papers (1945-1984), and membership rosters (1961-1979). In addition, issues of the Indianapolis League newsletter, the League Bulletin, and the national League newsletter, the National Voter, are also included. One issue of the Indiana Woman Voter (1965) and three issues of the Indiana Voter (1966, 1977, 1978) comprise one folder. Booklets and brochures from the years 1915 to 1984 outline the purpose and activities of the organization.

A large portion of the collection also concerns various political issues and topics of interest to the League. These papers include local government studies, school and tax issues, local neighborhood and preschool center information, public welfare material, and human resource information. Voter service material outlines the League's efforts in promoting citizen participation in government. In addition, six boxes of conservation material point to the League's commitment to the environment. Topics include energy, gas, and oil conservation, acid rain, land use, and water pollution. An energy conservation game teaches players environmental responsibility. Newspaper clippings and miscellaneous papers comprise the final boxes of the collection. Two oversized boxes contain scrapbooks dating from 1932 to 1969.
