John Taliaferro McKinney was born in Carolien County, Virginia in 1796. He was married twice, first to Sarah Augusta Mayo, to whom the letters are written, and secondly to Amanda E. Hall. He had three children with his first wife. He served in the War of 1812 in the Indiana Militia, 6th Brigade as Brigadier General. After the war he served in various governmental positions including the Indiana Senate from Franklin in 1829 to 1831. He also was a judge in Kentucky. He died in 1837 in Franklin County.

The collection contains letters exchanged between John T. McKinney and his first wife, Sarah Augusta Mayo. The letters contain personal feelings for each other, life back home, family matters and business McKinney is working on while away. Some letters are written to McKinney from his brother from 1822 to 1830.
