BIOGRAPHiCAL SKETCH

Oscar Bruce Lane (1881–1975) was born and raised in Bainbridge, Putnam County, Indiana, and was the grand nephew of Indiana Governor and United States Senator Henry Smith Lane.  From 1900–02 Lane attended Purdue University and he later was a student at Butler University.  In 1902, he began teaching at Bainbridge High School where he later served as principal for eight years.  During this time, he passed the bar exam and married Jessie May Gill of Cloverdale, Putnam County

Lane resigned from Bainbridge High School to run his and his father’s farms in Putnam County.  From 1934–50 he served in the Indiana State Senate as a member of the Republican Party.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

The collection consists of correspondence, legal and financial documents, account books, photographs and printed materials related to Lane’s career as a teacher, farmer and state senator.  The bulk of the collection is correspondence which is divided into two distinct categories.  The correspondence prior to 1933 mainly contains personal letters from family and friends. Financial material includes receipts (1928–44) and an account book of farm and personal expenses (1907–32).

Lane’s later correspondence, 1936–49 is primarily concerned with legislative matters.  This series consists of letters from constituents and carbon copies of Lane’s replies.  The most prominent subjects are school text book purchases, gross income tax, teacher’s salaries, the Milk Control Bill and Central Standard Time. The correspondence after 1949 is also political in nature, but more general in subject matter consisting primarily from associates regarding their friendship in office.  The printed material consists of Senate and House Bills either introduced by Lane or referred to his committee; information concerning legislative subjects of interest to Lane; legislative calendars, photographs, Republican Party campaign broadsides, newspaper clippings and pamphlets, 1935–1949.

Family member papers include graded essays by Nellie Ruth Lane in 1903 as a part of a correspondence course offered by the University of Chicago; essays of Reverend Oscar F. Lane; a letter to Mrs. O. F. Lane from Senator Forrest of Illinois concerning the death of her brother, a state senator; and the Sigournean Casket, a publication from 1865 of the Sigournean Society of North Western Christian University, of which Carrie L. Lane was a member.

The collection also contains the records of the Bainbridge Gravel Road Company, 1867–93, including stock certificates, receipts and an account book of board meeting minutes and stockholders.
